I enjoy catching a glimpse of the brilliant red coloring of the male Cardinals; Kentucky's state bird and a common sight outside my window. They are especially beautiful amid winter's more subdued palette.

in the dark of December
A magical thing
So sweet to remember
'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
in the dark of December.

What a lovely painting! I love how the colors are mostly subdued. Just beautiful!
I love this. It is breathtaking.
Faye,
So beautiful and mystical. Love that pop of red in the soft snowy tree branches. Really nice. Love the background color- what is that?
Thanks, everyone.
Kathy, I really wasn't trying to mix a specific color for the background, but was more interested in finding a neutral that leaned toward an icy color that would compliment the red. So I started with white and mixed in a tiny amount of ultramarine blue and phthalo green, then added small amounts of cad orange, cad yellow and cad red until it was grayed down. I hope that answers your question.
This is wonderful.... I like the subtlety of the color in this one!! FABULOUS!
Oh Faye, I love what you have been posting lately. I haven't had the chance to comment lately, but I can't let this pass. This is so beautiful, and I love the poem. A lovely reminder.
Faye, Yes, that answers how you got that gorgeous background color- icy but soft and grayed down just a tad. A perfect compliment to the red bird! I have to learn from you all and appreciate the help:)
Faye, very beautiful painting. I know I love looking out at my Cardinals (my favorite bird). Happy 2011!!!!
This is beautiful!
I love winter and your picture captures what is so lovely about it. It is cool and I love the snow.
